7 Simple Moving And Packing Hacks

For the first-time movers out there, it can feel like there is so much to do and so little time. And especially when you don’t know where to begin, the entire journey can seem daunting.

The foundation of a successful and stress-free move lies in preparation. So if you want to get ahead of the game, use these seven moving hacks and tips to make your upcoming move easy as can be!

#1. Make Sure You Are Organized

Preparation and organization are essential. Before your moving crew arrives, get as organized as possible. Make organized groupings of boxes or items so we can load our trucks more efficiently.

This allows the packing and moving process to proceed more smoothly and seamlessly. Keep in mind that our team usually takes big or heavy items first and finishes up with the other smaller odds and ends.

If you can, it’s also a good idea to empty dresser drawers. This makes the furniture lighter to carry and prevents items inside from shifting and becoming damaged during the move.

#2. When Packing Clothes, All You Need Is Hangers And Trash Bags

We offer complete packing services. But if you want to handle packing your clothes on your own, here’s one of the best packing tips out there.

Packing clothes can be one of the most frustrating parts of moving. But this hack doesn’t even require you to take your clothes off the hangers.

Here’s a detailed procedure of how to pack clothes the right way.

  1. Gather all your clothing items that are on hangers. Group them into bunches of 15 items each. You can give or take some depending on how bulky the clothes are.
  2. Take a garbage bag and, just as your clothes are hanging in your closet, pull the bag up from under them.
  3. Pull the bag taut at the top of your clothes and tie the strings of the trash bag to the top of the hangers. This seals the clothes within the bag and protects them from the elements.
  4. Put a rubber band around the hangers to keep the clothing items together. It’s not totally necessary, but it makes them easier to move.

Here’s a quick YouTube video if you need a little help with it. This method is much easier and cheaper than stuffing your clothes into wardrobe boxes or simple moving boxes.

Plus, the plastic truly keeps them safe from getting dirty, spoiled, or torn as you move.

Keep in mind that some versions of this method will have you cut a hole in the bottom of the plastic bags to pull the hangers through. But with the way we outlined for you here, you can reuse the trash bags once you arrive at your new home.

Waste not, want not!

#3. Make Sure You Have More Than Enough Packing Supplies

We offer full packing services. So you don’t need to lift a finger if you don’t want to! But sometimes people opt to pack their boxes, and that’s okay too.

If you decide to pack on your own, just ensure you have enough supplies to get the job done. And get the job done right.

Because whenever you skimp out on packing materials or supplies, you are already setting yourself up for a troubling move. It’s more likely that fragile items may break and you’ll ultimately create more work in the long run.

An excellent starter tip is to get different sizes of boxes. Getting some large boxes and some smaller boxes can help ensure your household items can be packaged properly and securely. For example, fragile or heavy items can go in small boxes, while bulky or lightweight pieces can go into large moving boxes.

And don’t forget to stock up on other packing materials like:

  • Plastic wrap
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing tape
  • Packing paper
  • Various sizes of cardboard boxes
  • Markers or a way to label boxes

Don’t stress about getting too much. It’s better than not having enough!

#4. Have An "Open First" Box

Moving is more than stuffing all your earthly belongings into boxes and hitting the road. You must think logically about the items you are using and then pack accordingly.

Make sure you set aside daily essentials you might need as soon as you reach your new home in a separate box. Fill this box with anything you might need to use immediately. This lets you use these items comfortably up until moving day and then immediately when you unpack them at your new home.

Put in items like:

  • Paper towels
  • Toilet paper
  • Toiletries like shampoo or toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • A spare outfit

Feel free also to pack plates, dishware, and scissors. Whatever you might think you’ll need, toss it in this box!

#5. Don't Forget To Purge And Let Go Of What You Don't Need

As modern consumers, we like to hold onto our stuff. But moving is the perfect opportunity to truly take stock of what you have and let go of things that don’t serve a purpose anymore.

Giving up clutter or items you no longer need or want is a good idea. Maybe it’s an old Christmas sweater that you’ve literally never worn. Or a kitchen dish that is taking up precious cupboard space.

Regardless, donating these items to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army is a good idea. It’ll help your move in the long run!

#6. You Are The Moving Director Here!

We’ll make your move easy. But at the end of the day, it’s still your move!

Whether you want to sit back and relax or be on the front lines guiding us each step of the way, it’s up to you how you want the move to go. We truly appreciate it when our customers are present and upfront in telling us what they want.

For example, upon arriving at your new home, give us an idea as to where you want the furniture to go. Clearly labeled boxes ensure that we know where they are supposed to go right off the bat.

It’ll save you both time and effort in the long run if we can put everything where it’s supposed to go right away!

#7. Don't Leave Any Loose Items Hanging Around

It might feel like some items can’t be confined to a box, but keep in mind that any loose item accounts for an extra trip to and from the moving truck. By the time the trucks are loaded, all of your items should have a home for the upcoming journey.

Try to pack electronics in their original box. Otherwise, securely package them with plenty of cushioning. Just make sure nothing is lying around. Knowing that each item is in a box will also prevent anything from being misplaced or lost.
